For Philip Snow, success did not come in a straight line. His path through BOCES took him in many different directions, but each step brought him closer to his dream of becoming a nurse—and ultimately, to professional success.

Philip’s first challenge was earning his High School Equivalency Diploma. “I had wanted my GED for a long time, but honestly, the idea of juggling work and studying—especially math—felt a little intimidating,” Philip admitted. “Still,I knew becoming a nurse was my goal, and this was my first step.”

With the support of Adult Literacy Instructor Margaret Rice, Philip gained the confidence to push forward. He credits her with believing in him even when he struggled to believe in himself. The program’s flexibility also allowed him to work at his own pace and focus on the areas where he needed the most help. That personalized approach made all the difference.

After earning his diploma, Philip stayed with BOCES and enrolled in the Adult Practical Nursing Program. His decision to pursue nursing was deeply personal. “One of the biggest reasons was my grandfather,” Philip shared. “He had Alzheimer’s and spent a long time in a nursing home. Seeing the kind of care he received, and the difference those nurses made, really stuck with me.It showed me how powerful compassion and patience can be.”

Philip described the Practical Nursing Program as “intense and challenging,”but also life-changing. It taught him discipline, responsibility, and professional skills, while also revealing qualities in himself he hadn’t recognized before—dedication, commitment, and perseverance. He now plans to continue his education and become a Registered Nurse.

“The staff I had at BOCES were some of the best teachers I’ve ever had, hands down,” he said. “I’ve never experienced educators who cared so deeply and genuinely wanted me to succeed. Anytime I felt overwhelmed, they were right here reminding me that I could.”

Looking back, Philip has a message for anyone who doubts themselves: “That voice that says, ‘It’s too late for me’ or ‘I missed my chance’? BOCES proves that’s not true.”
