NYS Licensing Programs
Preparation courses provide approved training for the adult student to register for the required NYS licensing examination. In New York State, legislators determine which occupations to license. The New York State Education Department, under Regent’s direction, administers professional regulation through the Office of the Professions. The Adult Education Department is authorized by the Office of the Professions to offer three different preparation programs that culminate in state licensing.
- The Cosmetology Program is under the Department of State Division of Licensing Services (https://www.dos.ny.gov/licensing/cosmetology/cosmetology.html).
- The Nurse Aide Program is under the direction of the NYS Department of Health (https://www.prometric.com/en-us/clients/nurseaide/....
- The Practical Nursing Program is under the direction of the NYS Office of the Professions (http://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/nurse/).
Cosmetology: Instruction includes a combination of classroom theory and practical experiences. Students will have the opportunity to practice on mannequins and patrons as they study hair-styling, hair coloring, perms, manicures, facials and pedicures.
The Nurse Aide training course prepares the adult student to seek licensure as a Certified Nurse Aid (CNA). The Adult Education Department is authorized to conduct adult Nurse Aide training by the NYS Education Department and NYS Department of Health.
Practical Nursing: Enter a profession that is rooted to the Hippocratic Oath for doctors and the Florence Nightingale Pledge for nursing. The Program for Practical Nursing at the Jefferson-Lewis BOCES is fully accredited by the New York State Education Department.
