Literacy Education prepares the adult student to take the high school equivalency examination that is identified as the GED®. Literacy Education is funded by state and federal workforce sources. As such, students are obligated to attend on a regular basis and advance to attain a high school equivalency diploma. Programming includes a combination of preparation activities to acquire literacy skills and workforce development skills.

The Literacy Education Program begins with a Literacy Orientation session. The purpose of Literacy Orientation is to determine academic abilities to create a unique learning plan for each student. Literacy Orientation is a two-day event (9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.) and is offered on the JCC Campus, Dulles Building Rm 3-105 in Watertown and the JCC-Lewis County Education Center in Lowville. On the first day, students will complete a student information form and take assessments in Reading and Math. On the second day, students will hear short presentations from local agencies such as Public Health or American Job Center, etc. More detail is presented about the program and students will view their assessment results. The student and an instructor will decide on a program schedule that will meet the needs of the student and assure progress in the program. Subsequently, each student will report to the literacy class selected and start work on their learning plan.

Students who attain a high school equivalency diploma are invited to attend graduation ceremonies. Graduation ceremonies are held each June at the Hilton Garden Inn, Watertown.
