BOCES Expands Heavy Equipment Program to Lewis County

Tuesday, August 30, 2022

There will be lots of heavy lifting taking place within the Career & Technical Education Department in Lewis County beginning in the 2022-23 school year. The Heavy Equipment program, which had previously only been offered to Jefferson County students at the Bohlen Technical Center in Watertown, has now been expanded to students at the Sackett Technical Center.

Instruction for the new Heavy Equipment program in Lewis County will take place at the Lewis County JCC Education Center in Lowville, which also houses the Sackett Center’s Engineering & Design program. This expansion will now allow high school students at all 18 of our component districts in Jefferson, Lewis, Hamilton, Herkimer, and Oneida Counties to enroll and learn the skills and technology necessary for successful employment within the heavy equipment field.

Teaching the Lewis County course is Mr. Travis Thomas, who is no stranger to BOCES. Mr. Thomas graduated from the Heavy Equipment program at the Bohlen Technical Center in 2011 while attending Carthage Central School. He brings 11 years of experience into the field having worked for the Jefferson County Highway Department, the NYS DOT, and the Town of Victor (NY) Highway Department

We want to welcome Mr. Thomas back to the BOCES family. He says he is very excited to return and share his knowledge with new generations of students.

Visit our Heavy Equipment webpage to learn more about the program and talk to your school counselor for information about enrolling.
