Local Students Participate In Odyssey Of the Mind 2016

Creative problem solving was the name of the game March 5 as students from throughout the North Country competed in the Odyssey of the Mind tournament held at Watertown High School and Case Middle School. Jefferson-Lewis BOCES sponsored the tournament, which was the first to combine participants in Region 8 and 9.

Fifty teams from the regions participated in five different problems along with a primary problem designed to encourage first and second graders to participate in the program. Teams were challenged with creating a solution to a long-term problem and developing a skit around their solution.

Additionally, teams compete in a spontaneous problem. Members are tasked with generating immediate and creative responses to a problem within a short period of time. For example, teams were asked to name two things that have something in common and what it is.

“All teams that participated on Saturday were incredibly creative and enthusiastic about their problem solutions,” says Stacey Eger, Professional and Program Development Supervisor.

On top of the competition, there was a treat for those in attendance. The movie Minions was shown prior to the awards ceremony.

Many of the participants will be awarded the opportunity to attend the state completion being held at SUNY Binghamton on April 2, 2016.
