COSMETOLOGY

Cosmetology is a demanding career that requires a wide range of skills.  Artistic ability, as well as technical and communication skills are critical to success.  Throughout the two-year program, our Cosmetology program focuses on learning the latest techniques in haircutting, perming, coloring, pin curls, roller placement, manicuring, artificial nails, and skin care.  Students also develop computer and management skills that will give them an edge when entering the work force.  The students spend time working in a real salon environment with clients from the community.  Additionally, time is spent reviewing New York State Cosmetology Board procedures necessary for obtaining a license.

Students attend the technical centers for approximately 2.5 hours daily.  Each student is given a day planner at the beginning of each week that outlines the week ahead.  This allows the students to practice time management skills.  We generally start with attendance, followed by lecture and/or demonstrations.  The remainder of the class time is used by the students to perform the newly acquired skills.

The Cosmetology I and II courses combined consist of 1000 hours of NYS required training to be eligible to apply for a Cosmetology License.  The 1000 hours are obtained by completing the program, which includes attending two-years and a once a week afternoon session of clinic time.  Additionally, students can get 1/2 a credit each year in Science and English to help meet their high school graduation requirements.  Students may also choose post-secondary education to study Business Management that will assist them in owning their own salon.  Articulation agreements are available with some colleges for students who wish to pursue a career in Massage Therapy.
